The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed small-savings scheme with a 15-year term, a sovereign guarantee and fully tax-free returns. You can deposit ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh per financial year, and the balance compounds annually at a rate the government sets each quarter — currently 7.1%. This calculator shows your maturity value instantly.
Because contributions qualify for Section 80C, interest is tax-free and the maturity amount is tax-free too (EEE status), PPF's effective return beats most fixed deposits of similar safety. Move the sliders to see how yearly deposits, the rate and extensions beyond 15 years change your corpus.
How is PPF maturity calculated?
PPF deposits are treated as made at the start of each year and the balance compounds annually: each year, value = (previous balance + deposit) × (1 + r), where r is the annual rate ÷ 100. Written as a single formula this is the future value of an annuity-due: FV = P × [((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r] × (1 + r), with P the yearly deposit and n the number of years.
For example, investing the full ₹1,50,000 every year at 7.1% for 15 years means you deposit ₹22,50,000 in total, and the balance grows to about ₹40,68,000 at maturity — roughly ₹18,18,000 of tax-free interest. In practice the bank credits interest annually but computes it monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month, so deposit before the 5th to earn interest for that month.
How to use this calculator
- Set your yearly investment — anywhere from ₹500 to the ₹1.5 lakh statutory cap.
- Leave the rate at 7.1% (the current government-notified rate) or test other rates, since the rate is reset every quarter.
- Choose the tenure: 15 years is the minimum lock-in; slide beyond it to model 5-year extension blocks.
- Read off the invested amount, interest earned and maturity value, then open the table for the year-by-year balance.
PPF rules worth knowing
PPF is one of the few EEE (exempt-exempt-exempt) investments left in India: the deposit is deductible under Section 80C up to ₹1.5 lakh, the interest is tax-free every year, and the entire maturity amount is tax-free. The account has a hard 15-year lock-in, but you are not fully locked out of the money — a loan against the balance is available from the 3rd to the 6th financial year, and partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th year onwards.
After year 15 you can extend the account indefinitely in 5-year blocks, with or without fresh contributions, and the balance keeps compounding tax-free — which is why the chart above bends steeply upward at longer tenures. The interest rate is notified quarterly by the Ministry of Finance; it has ranged between 7.1% and 8.8% over the last decade, so treat long-horizon projections as estimates rather than guarantees.
Frequently asked questions
What is the current PPF interest rate?
The government sets the PPF rate every quarter; it is currently 7.1% per annum, compounded annually. Because the rate can change each quarter, a long-term projection at a fixed rate is an estimate — though PPF rates have historically moved slowly.
Is PPF maturity tax-free?
Yes — PPF enjoys full EEE status. Your deposits qualify for a Section 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh a year, the interest earned is exempt from tax, and the entire maturity amount is tax-free in your hands.
Can I withdraw money before 15 years?
Partially, yes. From the 7th financial year you can make one partial withdrawal per year, capped at 50% of the balance at the end of the 4th preceding year or the preceding year, whichever is lower. Premature closure of the whole account is allowed only after 5 years and only for specific reasons (medical treatment, higher education, change of residency status), with a 1% rate penalty.
Can I take a loan against my PPF account?
Yes, between the 3rd and 6th financial years you can borrow up to 25% of the balance at the end of the second year preceding the application. The loan carries interest at just 1% above the PPF rate and must be repaid within 36 months; partial withdrawals replace the loan facility from year 7.
What are the minimum and maximum PPF deposits?
You must deposit at least ₹500 per financial year to keep the account active, and you can invest at most ₹1.5 lakh per year across all your PPF accounts combined — the same ceiling as the Section 80C deduction. Amounts above the cap earn no interest and are refunded without interest.
What happens after the 15-year lock-in ends?
You have three choices: withdraw the full corpus tax-free, extend the account in 5-year blocks with fresh contributions (submit Form H within one year of maturity), or extend without contributions — the balance keeps earning tax-free interest either way. Many investors extend repeatedly and use PPF as a tax-free retirement bucket.
