These receipts total Rs 1,80,000, above the Rs 1,00,000 annual limit — employers then require the landlord's PAN (or a signed declaration if the landlord has none). Add it above.

Rent receipts are the proof accepted for an HRA exemption under section 10(13A) of the Income-tax Act — keep a signed copy of each month you claim.

Rent paid in cash above Rs 5,000 a month should carry a revenue stamp signed across by the landlord. A space for it is printed on every receipt.

• Retain this receipt as proof of rent paid under section 10(13A).

A rent receipt is the landlord's written acknowledgement that rent for a given month was received. It is the one document your employer's payroll team asks for when you claim the House Rent Allowance exemption under section 10(13A) — without receipts covering the months you claim, the exemption is dropped and the full HRA in your salary becomes taxable. Most employers collect them once a year during the investment-proof window, which is exactly when twelve receipts are needed at once.

What a valid rent receipt must contain

  • Tenant name — the person claiming the exemption.
  • Landlord name and signature — a receipt without the landlord's signature is not proof.
  • Address of the rented property — the house you actually occupy.
  • Rent amount in figures and in words, and the month it covers.
  • Date of payment and the mode — cash, cheque, bank transfer or UPI.
  • Landlord PAN, once the yearly rent crosses ₹1,00,000.

Landlord PAN and the ₹1,00,000 rule

If the rent you claim for the financial year exceeds ₹1,00,000 — that is ₹8,334 a month — your employer must collect the landlord's PAN along with the receipts. If the landlord has no PAN, a signed declaration from the landlord with their name and address takes its place. Below ₹1,00,000 a year, receipts alone are normally accepted. The PAN field in this tool is optional precisely because it only becomes necessary above that limit; enter it and it is printed on every receipt in the batch.

Revenue stamp on cash rent above ₹5,000

Where rent above ₹5,000 is paid in cash, Indian practice is to affix a ₹1 revenue stamp on the receipt and have the landlord sign across it, so the acknowledgement carries the weight of a stamped discharge. When your monthly rent is above ₹5,000 the generated PDF prints a marked box for the stamp in the signature area. Rent paid by cheque, bank transfer or UPI carries its own bank trail, so no stamp is expected — though a signed receipt is still required.

How to use this generator

  • Enter the tenant name, the landlord name and the address of the rented property.
  • Type the monthly rent and choose how it is paid.
  • Set the period — or use a quick-fill button for a full financial year or the last twelve months.
  • Add the landlord's PAN and address if your employer needs them.
  • Download the PDF, print it, and have the landlord sign each page.

Receipt numbers run in sequence (RR-001, RR-002 and so on) so the batch reads as a proper set; change the prefix if your landlord uses their own numbering. Up to 60 months can be generated in one go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I generate rent receipts for a whole year at once?

Yes — that is the point of this tool. Pick a from-month and a to-month and it produces one receipt per month automatically, all in a single PDF with one receipt per page. A full financial year is a single click on the quick-fill buttons.

Is the landlord's PAN mandatory on a rent receipt?

No. PAN is an optional field here. Employers only insist on it when the rent you claim for the year exceeds ₹1,00,000 — above that limit the landlord's PAN, or a signed declaration if the landlord does not have one, must go with your HRA proof.

Do I need a revenue stamp on the receipt?

By convention a ₹1 revenue stamp is affixed when rent above ₹5,000 is paid in cash, and the landlord signs across it. When the monthly rent crosses ₹5,000 the PDF prints a marked space for the stamp. Rent paid by cheque, bank transfer or UPI already leaves a trail and needs no stamp.

What must a valid rent receipt contain?

The tenant's name, the landlord's name and signature, the address of the rented property, the rent amount, the month it covers and the date of payment. Landlord PAN is added when annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000. Every receipt this tool generates carries all of these.

Are my details uploaded anywhere?

No. The form, the receipt numbering and the PDF are all built inside your browser. Nothing you type — names, address, rent or PAN — is sent to a server, and no signup is required.

Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to my parents?

Yes, provided the arrangement is genuine: your parents must actually own the property, you must really pay the rent, and they must declare that rent as income in their return. Receipts for rent that was never paid are a false claim and can be penalised.
