A home rooftop solar system in India gets a central subsidy of up to ₹78,000 under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, and several states add their own top-up on top. This calculator works out both for the state you choose, shows what you pay after subsidy, and estimates how quickly the system earns that back in bill savings.
Pick your state, set the system size and, if you have one, enter your vendor's quotation. Gujarat, Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have state rates built in; every other state shows the central subsidy alone, with a higher special-category option for the North-East, hill states, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and the islands.
The central subsidy under PM Surya Ghar
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana pays a Central Financial Assistance (CFA) on residential rooftop solar. It is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW, so a 1 kW system gets ₹30,000, 2 kW gets ₹60,000 and 3 kW or more gets the maximum ₹78,000. Nothing is paid for capacity above 3 kW.
North-Eastern states, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and the island territories are special-category regions with a 10% higher rate — ₹33,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹19,800 for the third — which makes the 3 kW maximum ₹85,800.
The central subsidy needs a registered vendor, modules made with domestically produced cells, and a net meter. You apply on the National Portal for Rooftop Solar (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) and the subsidy is paid into your bank account after the system is inspected and commissioned. As published, the scheme is scheduled to run until 31 March 2027.
State top-ups included in this calculator
State schemes come in different shapes, so the calculator handles each the way the state defines it. Rates were last checked on 25 October 2026 against published reports; use 'Edit rates' if yours has changed.
- Gujarat — household pays 10% of a benchmark cost (5% for SC/ST); the state covers the rest after the central subsidy. Systems up to 2.18 kWp, commissioned from 22 October 2026.
- Delhi — ₹10,000 per kW, capped at ₹30,000, on top of the central subsidy; a 3 kW system gets ₹1,08,000 in total.
- Bihar — ₹10,000 per kW, up to ₹20,000 per consumer, approved in August 2026 for one year.
- Uttar Pradesh — ₹15,000 per kW, up to ₹30,000 per consumer through UPNEDA (reports differ on current availability).
- Rajasthan — a flat ₹17,000 for eligible free-electricity households with systems of 1.1 kW and above (reports differ).
States with no confirmed top-up
For Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and most other states, published sources conflict or point only to targeted schemes — for example Maharashtra's programme for low-income households — so they are treated as central-only. Goa launched a rooftop solar subsidy from April 2026 and Tamil Nadu has proposed up to ₹1 lakh for homes, but neither has published per-kW amounts or a final order, so they are not modelled yet. Check your state energy agency before assuming there is no top-up.
How to apply
- Register on the National Portal for Rooftop Solar (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) with your state, DISCOM and electricity consumer number.
- Apply for rooftop solar, then wait for feasibility approval from your DISCOM.
- Get the system installed by a vendor registered on the portal, and submit the plant details.
- Apply for net metering and complete the DISCOM inspection and commissioning.
- Upload your bank account details and a cancelled cheque so the subsidy can be credited.
How to use this calculator
- Set the capacity of the system you plan to install, in kWp (DC) — the number on your vendor's quotation.
- Enter your vendor's quotation if you have one, otherwise leave it blank and the calculator uses a typical cost per kW.
- Open 'Edit rates' if a rate has changed since this page was updated — every figure recalculates instantly.
- Add an electricity rate to see the yearly bill saving and a simple payback period.
- Download the result as a one-page PDF, optionally with your name, consumer number, DISCOM and installer printed on it.
What this estimate does not cover
The calculator does not check whether your roof, DISCOM or consumer category qualifies, and it cannot see local rules such as feeder-level capacity limits. GST, structure upgrades, meter charges and loan interest are not modelled. The payback figure is a simple, undegraded estimate that assumes about 1,400 units a year per kW — real generation depends on your location, shading and tilt.
Frequently asked questions
How much central subsidy will I get for 1, 2 and 3 kW?
₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW and ₹78,000 for 3 kW or more. Special-category states and UTs get ₹33,000 for 1 kW, ₹66,000 for 2 kW and ₹85,800 for 3 kW or more.
Which states give an extra subsidy on top of PM Surya Ghar?
This calculator includes Gujarat, Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Other states may start or end schemes with their budgets, so confirm with your state energy agency or DISCOM.
My state is not in the list — can I still use it?
Yes. Choose 'Any other state or UT' for the central subsidy alone, or the special-category option if you are in the North-East, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh or the islands. You can also edit the rates manually.
Does the subsidy depend on the size of my roof?
Not directly — the subsidy depends on the system capacity you install, up to 3 kW for the central scheme. A 3 kW system needs roughly 250–300 sq ft of shadow-free roof.
Is this calculator free and does it store my details?
Yes, it is free with no registration. Everything is calculated in your browser, and any details you add for the PDF are used only to build that file on your device — nothing is uploaded.
Can I get both the central and the state subsidy?
Where a state runs a top-up, it is paid in addition to the central PM Surya Ghar subsidy, usually through the same application. Each state has its own conditions on system size, category and timing, which are listed on its page.
Is the subsidy calculated on my vendor's bill?
The central subsidy is a fixed amount per kW, not a share of your bill. Some state schemes work from a benchmark cost instead of the actual quotation. Either way, anything you pay above the benchmark or the subsidy-eligible cost is yours to bear.
How accurate are these figures?
They follow the central scheme and each state's announced top-up as reported when this page was last updated. State amounts change with budgets and government orders, so treat the result as an estimate and confirm the final figure with the National Portal and your DISCOM before you sign with a vendor.
